Helping Hoops is all about offering opportunities to young people who are suffering from disadvantage. This is why we are extremely pleased to announce the launch of Helping Hoops Get Active, which joins our weekly schedule as the eighth program.
Helping Hoops Get Active, which runs every Friday from 1pm to 3pm at the North Melbourne Football Club on Arden Street, is a free weekly basketball and recreation program for asylum seekers of all abilities, and is run in partnership with The Huddle (North Melbourne Football Club’s community program). Get Active is designed to give asylum seekers, who face social isolation and a sense of disconnection from the wider community, opportunities and a chance to get out and active on a weekly basis.
The Get Active program is the first of its kind for Helping Hoops, which has until now focused primarily on children from a migrant and refugee background. We are excited to work with the Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in addressing the need for more activities for young asylum seekers as they face uncertainty around their future.
Agencies and case workers looking for more information, or to refer clients, should see the flyer below for location and contact details.
