The Helping Hoops Baller of the Month is Melisa (one S). Melisa is one of the familiar faces at our Croxton program and has been involved with Helping Hoops since 2011.
Each July, teams from across Australia lace-up their sneakers and put their skills on display at the South Sudanese Australian National Classic. This year's event saw Melbourne once again play host for the second straight year, with Werribee's brand new Eagle Stadium the choice of venue for the first time.
Every year, the 24 Hour Charity Shootout gets bigger and better, and 2016 continued this trend with another huge result for Helping Hoops. This year, we set out to make 20,000 free throws and raise $50,000, and we are extremely proud to announce that we smashed both of these goals.
Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
