Helping Hoops has never been solely about basketball. Values drive everything we do as a charity. From our culture as an organisation to the lessons we teach children participating in our programs, values are what hold us together and give us something to measure our actions against.
We have just launched a new segment that allows our participants a chance to tell their stories without any meddling from us grown ups. Helping Hoops Kids' Korner sees kids take control of the camera and film what is important to them and what they like (or dislike) about Helping Hoops.
Helping Hoops recently welcomed Bluegum to the growing list of companies supporting our charity. Bluegum are Australia’s leading manufacturer of premium branded merchandise and promotional products with a focus on low environmental impact.
The inaugural Melbourne Boomers Girls Academy kicked off in March/April and saw over 80 young women from across the city attend the six-week program every Tuesday at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South.
Helping Hoops has recently completed a successful move to Melbourne's outer west. Helping Hoops Werribee replaces our Sunshine program in 2017 in response to the multicultural community's increasing relocation from the inner-west and Sunshine area to Werribee and surrounding suburbs.
Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
