As a group that works with hundreds of youth from emerging multicultural communities, Helping Hoops shares the wider community's concern regarding the recent gang-related violence in Melbourne. It is well publicised that these gangs predominantly consist of recent immigrant (such as South Sudanese) and other ethnic minority groups.
Helping Hoops is excited to announce the addition of our eighth weekly program, Helping Hoops Future. Helping Hoops Future, a name chosen by young people in the program, is a free, multicultural basketball program that is targeted specifically at the older and more advanced participants who have come through their local Helping Hoops community programs and are seeking to continue their basketball into their late teens.
With Melbourne United's loss to the New Zealand Breakers on February 20, the Three-Point Community Sponsorship came to a close for 2015-16. The campaign has eclipsed previous years, with an enormous tally raised thanks to local Melbourne retailer Sportsmart's $40 donations for every three-pointer made by United throughout the NBL season.
Helping Hoops has been proud to collaborate recently with the Twelve Batmitzcah Program to help bridge the gap between our children and those from the greater community. The Twelve Batmitzvah Program is a unique hands on volunteering program for batmitzvah girls and their parents to complete a year of kindness.
All throughout the current 2015-16 NBL season, Sportsmart have been donating $40 to us every time Melbourne United make a three-point basket. This is the second season that Sportsmart have joined us as the Three-Point Community Sponosr, and the campaign celebrated a milestone recently when we reached $10,000 raised.
Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
