A perfect summer's day greeted all in attendance on Saturday, February 7 for the 2016 instalment of Melbourne's premiere streetball tournament, the Prahran Summer Jam. The Summer Jam featured some of Melbourne's best streetball players, along with skate competitions, music, dunk contest and a host of other attractions that kept the bumper crowd entertained from morning until evening.
We are delighted to announce the addition of our fifth coach to the Helping Hoops ranks, Steve Bacash. Steve has been a volunteer with the organisation since late 2012, and has since volunteered at our Richmond and North Melbourne programs on a weekly basis.
Frankston, in Melbourne's south, was again the venue for the 2015 instalment of the South Sudanese Australian Summer Slam - an annual basketball tournament organised by the South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association (SSANBA) that sees over 45 teams from across Australian compete across five divisions.
Kuany Kuany has been a participant in the Helping Hoops Sunshine program since it started in 2011. From a skinny boy to a physically imposing young man, we have watched Kuany grow on and off the court, and are truly impressed by his work ethic, community focus and all-around outlook on life.
Thanks Sara Blicavs and Annalise Pickrel from the WNBL Dandenong Rangers for coming and hooping with our kids at Helping Hoops Dandenong tonight. The kids got a lot out of it.
Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
