Whether it be on the basketball court, in the classroom, or in the workplace, girls deserve to have the same opportunities to succeed as their male counterparts. In the communities Helping Hoops works in, young women do not always enjoy the same chance to participate as boys, and it has long been a goal of our organisation to bridge this gap.
On August 12, Helping Hoops welcomed the men's basketball team from Yale University to our Croxton program, where they had some fun with our kids with special needs. The team, which is based in New Haven, Connecticut, is current champions of the Ivy League, and is in Australia on a 10-day visit in preparation for the 2015/16 NCAA Division I season.
The NBL is now the "new NBL," after the league's rebrand was launched this morning in Melbourne. The rebrand, which features a simple and bold corporate identity with strong colours, was launched with the help of a select group of children from Helping Hoops, along with volunteers and Executive Director, Adam McKay.
When Helping Hoops ran its first program in 2010, that program was delivered by someone who has become a friend and role model for hundreds of kids, Coach Mike. Coach Mike has been a big part of making Helping Hoops what it is today through his passion, skills, positive attitude and big smile he brings to everything he does.

Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
