Jenny volunteers at Helping Hoops Broadmeadows every Tuesday and has been involved for around two years. Jenny describes Helping Hoops as a lot of fun and a chance for kids to participate in activities they ordinarily wouldn't get a chance to.
ABC TV featured Helping Hoops with a touching segment aired during the coverage of a recent WNBL game. The piece included our Ambassador, Tegan Cunningham, and some excited kids from Helping Hoops Croxton.
On February 25, 2015, SBS World News aired a segment on Helping Hoops featuring kids, coaches and volunteers from our Fitzroy program. The minute-and-a-half piece aired nationally and showed just how Helping Hoops is impacting the lives of children in inner-city public housing estates.
Helping Hoops introduced a brand new mascot over the weekend to help add some colour and fun to programs for our participants. The basketball-loving pigeon was without a name until the Helping Hoops community came together and decided "Swoop" best suited the feathered hero.
All throughout the current 2014-15 NBL season, local sports retailer Sportsmart have been donating $40 to Helping Hoops for every three-point shot made by Melbourne United. On the weekend, United hit their 250th three, and reached the capped target of $10,000.
Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Helping Hoops aims to build self-esteem, provide a sense of belonging and community, aid social cohesion, instill discipline, develop goal setting and leadership skills, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
